Cretan Quartet from Stelios Petrakis

The Cretan Quartet is an ensemble consisting of four exceptional young musicians, presenting Cretan music and dance old and new, harmoniously combining love and respect with modern creativity. Making use of the differences between the roots, inheritance, local idioms and instruments with which each musician is familiar, the ensemble presents a wide spectrum of Cretan music from one end of the island to the other.

At certain points in the programme, the music accompanies the dancing, giving the performance a third dimension, a spatial movement and expression. Cretan music is, in most of its forms, traditionally dance music, and the dancing of Thanassis Mavrokostas blends in harmoniously, effortlessly and primordially, combining strength with nimbleness and grace.

Stelios Petrakis is responsible for the programme and its technical and artistic aspects.
